Week 2:  Day 13       Health Principle: Smoothies

Since you heard yesterday how to use the blender to keep weight down and eat healthily on the run, thought it would be a good idea to supply you with a few recipes. The baby step of the day is to prepare one of these recipes and drink it.

If you made bread and you didn’t like the result, you wouldn’t decide that you just don’t like bread. You might try another recipe until you get it right. But, for some reason, people will use the blender once and decide that they don’t like this sort of low-calorie milk shake.

If you don’t like one recipe, try another. Pay close attention to how long you let the blender whirl. Longer makes it more airy and larger. Shorter period leaves it thicker and lumpier. Forget the 16 button types (does anyone really know the difference between the 14th speed and the 10th speed). Just get the most heavy duty blender you can afford (so it will chop ice). I bought the best one at Walmart and it has one switch that turns it on and off. The art is not which button to push. The art is a combination of ingredients, how long you let the blender whirl, and sometimes how you add the ingredients. I know this sounds simplistic but I really believe that a good physician should understand all useful therapies (not just those sold at the drug store). There is no doubt that food changes our health. And, multiple, scientific studies have shown that drinking protein shakes during the day can help normalize weight and help keep it normal.

So, in a few days I learn the details of a new anthrax vaccine that I will be studying as one of the principle investigators. But, in my opinion, how to use a blender to make a food that’s quick enough and tasty enough to help people lose weight is just as important.

So, here’s the first recipe:

Add in this order: One cup of 1% milk, one banana, 3 to 6 frozen strawberries, one scoop of whey protein (choose a protein powder with around 24 grams of protein and 2 grams of carbohydrates). Whirl until just until smooth then turn off the blender and enjoy.

For variation, you can try adding a packet of Splenda. Try freezing the banana: peel, wrap in Saran wrap, throw in freezer. Also, substitute plain yogurt for the milk. If you’re lactose intolerant, use water and egg white protein or soy protein.

Here’s another recipe:

½ cup of yogurt, a 4 to 6 ice cubes, 1 cup of skim milk, 1 or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, 5 to 8 frozen strawberries, 1 or 2 teaspoons of whey powder.

Don’t try to be too exact. As long as the proportions are close to those given, you’ll have a drink that’s large and very satisfying. Yes you’ll consume several hundred calories, but you do need to eat something. The several hundred calories from one of these drinks will satisfy you like a thousand calories from most meals.
