Welcome to Botox.
What is This Poison?
How Can Botox Make Me Beautiful?
Leonardo da Vinci Measured Beauty (and how it applies to Botox)
Yesterday, I sat down with my new
receptionist here at the office and told her that some of my patients thought
she was angry.
She looked at me with much surprise
and said, "But, I enjoy my work and love our patients."
"I know you do," I answered, "but,
they think you are angry and I think I know how to solve the problem."
Here's what she looked like before
treatment in a relaxed view (I asked her to relax as much as
possible):
Although she schedules BOTOX patients for me to treat, she did not think that
she needed treatment.
Notice, that even relaxing, she has two
small vertical shadows (the "11 sign") between the brows that make her look
worried or slightly angry.
Then, I treated her frown lines with
BOTOX and gave her a slight brow lift by treating the outer brow.
This morning, she was very happy because just a few millimeters made a very
big change in her face. Here's the way she looks
one day after treatment (this
morning) with a relaxed face:
Notice that the shadows between the brows have almost gone. Also, note
that the her brows do not angle down as much (giving her a more friendly
appearance).
Here are some important points:
This woman is very pleasant and loving and has a fun sense
of humor. In both the before
and the after pictures, she was cracking jokes and talking breezily with me.
But, in the before
pictures she looks worried and in the after pictures she looks like she
really is...happy and relaxed and loving. The only difference between the two pictures is that it's one
day later after being treated with BOTOX.
This is a very young
woman (she'd rather me not say her age). She has very few wrinkles in the before
picture. So, giving her BOTOX was not about treatment of wrinkles.
Her expression did not match her feelings--this is why my patients occasionally
thought she was angry when she really felt much compassion and affection for
them. I think the frown lines may be a side effect of motherhood (she's
also a wonderful mother).
She's not frozen: after treatment, she can still
frown some (but she's not frowning when she's relaxed). She can still
raise her eyebrows (she can still express surprise and happiness). Some,
people want a "frozen" forehead to prevent any wrinkle formation. But, the
point is that most people want some expression and she and most of my patients
will have a more fresh and relaxed look without a frozen face. This is the art
of BOTOX: relaxation, freshness, beauty, without a frozen mannequin face.
I have the habit of knitting the brows together when I'm trying to solve a
problem. This is just a reflex or habit that happens when I read or
think about a problem. After 12 years in the ER and more years in private
practice, I've thought about a number of problems and have done much brow
knitting. Many of my patients have found (as have I) that by treating the
space between the brows with BOTOX, I can now think and plan and read without
looking angry or worried.

There's much confusion about BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Hopefully these pages will answer all your questions:
BOTOX cosmetic relaxes the muscles by inhibiting the chemical
that signals the muscle to contract. It's frequently used to smooth frown
lines, crows feet, and the lines of the neck.
One 10-minute treatment—a few tiny injections using a very small needle—and within days there's a
noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows,
which can last up to 4 months. Results may vary but often results will last
longer than 4 months after several treatments.
BOTOX® Cosmetic
is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum
bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown
lines between the brows to form over time.
In 2005, almost 3.3 million procedures were performed with FDA-approved
BOTOX® Cosmetic. Botox is very safe. The lethal
dose of BOTOX is so large that it would cost around $35,000 (the LD50).
If you're considering buying Botox Cosmetic, here's a guide to the number of units needed for various
results:
Frown lines, Female: 30 to 42 units
Frown lines, Male: 40 to 70 units
Horizontal Forehead Lines: 8 to 15 units
Crow's Feet for both eyes: 18 to 56 units
Bunny (scrunch lines) on nose: 8 to 10 units
Under eye (total to open both eyes): 2 to 4 units
Brow lift (total for both eyes): 5 to 10 units
Neck, Vertical Bands: 12 to 15 units per band
Neck, Horizontal Lines: 6 to 8 units per band
Appointments are kept very private. There is no
waiting room. Why should you wait if you have an appointment?
Our goal is that you could come and go from our office with no waiting and
with little chance of even seeing
another person.
I charge $12 per unit. When I see you on the first
visit, I determine how many units you need based upon your facial muscles.
Smaller muscles need less. As you use BOTOX more, you need fewer units
with re-treatment.
Botox is not just for women
Why
should men use Botox? A man who goes to the gym to work out and
cares about his clothes and grooming is a man who not only cares about his
appearance, but what it says about him personally, as well as in business.
A man who has pronounced lines between his brows may be perceived as
angry or stressed.
A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment requires little time out of the
office. So, it’s possible to have the procedure done during a lunch hour and
head right back to the office.
